Rockfish Barotrauma
Many rockfish species are particularly sensitive to reductions in pressure since the air in their swim bladders expands substantially. The swim bladder is a buoyancy control organ and even when slowly reeled in from a depth of only 20 m (60’), a rockfish’s swim bladder can expand to three times its size, putting pressure on the fish’s organs.nnThis video shows the release of a Rockfish suffering barotrauma. This fish was caught off the Southern California Coast at about 300 feet. This video will show how to put the fish on the RokLees Fish Descender Device, lower it in to water, then release the reel into frees-pool to 120 feet where a simple jerk up on the rod will release the fish. The RokLees will all fishermen to recompress fish with out further injuring them. We also put in underwater footage to show the release of the fish. The fish is released and then swims on down.
